The anti-plagiarism checklist

To avoid plagiarism, make sure you:

• Don’t copy-paste entire chunks of text into a new one - this is plainly wrong!
• Use quotation marks to clearly indicate when you are using someone else’s words verbatim (alongside the in-text citation)
• Rephrase a sentence thoroughly and add a citation, if you don’t want to quote verbatim but still refer to someone’s idea
• Keep track of your sources at all times, using a reference management tool if that helps (such as EndNote or Zotero)
• Cite sources consistently and correctly, including author names, year of publication and other information as relevant
• Make sure you include a complete and accurate reference of everything you cited within the body of your text in your list of references at the end of your paper or thesis
• Use a plagiarism checker before submitting your essay or your manuscript to a journal, to make sure no accidental plagiarism has occurred
